Talk about a four-lettered word in many of the organizations I work with – that’s “Change”. OK, I haven’t totally lost it, I know “Change” has 6 letters, but from the looks on people’s faces when you use it in their world, especially as it relates to their daily routine – oh my goodness you’d think I’d taken the Lord’s name in vein! Thanks to change we have flushing toilets, microwaves and even restaurant menus in the palm of our hands in a city we’ve never visited before and we don’t crucify the people who brought those to our attention do we? Change for change sake isn’t often good, but carefully planned and executed, change can be an organization’s best friend, but it all starts with the individuals who change themselves first. We don’t often get the chance to rehearse for change, but if we truly believe in the “Why” behind the change we’ll be at least a step ahead of the curve when the change comes down the pike and be able to model a resilient attitude and posture for our team in the process – which is invaluable in leading a team through a significant change. |
