Personal and Professional Balance – fact or fiction?

Research shows that a staggering 98 percent of us send work-related email on nights and weekends – talk about working overtime!  This is just one more of the ways the sacred lines between work and play have been blurred…… for the worse in my experience and opinion.  According to a collaborative study between Gyro, a global creative agency and Forbes Insights, the group’s research found that only 3 percent of respondents said they never answer email on vacation.  Chalk this overlap of leisure and labor up to the internet, social networking, smartphones and other connectivity tricks and treats that now rule our lives.  Me personally – I think it’s a matter of setting legitimate boundaries with your clients on how you will use your time on their behalf and sticking to it.  Sure, I’ve certainly had those projects that for a “season” required more than I would normally have allotted professionally out of my day, but again that’s a “season” and one I try to control to the best of my ability, always making sure my family knows who’s “on first” for sure.  Think about it – do something about it if you’re a 3 percenter – “we” owe it to our families.
