Empowering is about instilling and encouraging power in those around you.

Empowerment defined – scary stuff, especially for a reformed control freak like me!  Most agencies I work with, including my own, were at some point in time was a “one man show” and usually a “girl Friday” as my Dad used to term it.  I call her a “gal”.  (Yes, I can get away with that because I am a “gal”…)  At any rate, because most every organization has at its core this early stage infancy that looked like my “guy/gal” scenario.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that there’s a huge element of “we’ve always done it this way” and “I make all the decisions” – a classic anti-empowerment mentality too by the way.  A team that isn’t empowered are never going to be as productive or profitable as their micro-managed counterparts, but it has to start at the top of the organization with a willingness to instill that power.
